Gino Strada, one of the most important Italian and European figures in the field of civil commitment to the lives of others, has died at the age of 73. A doctor, surgeon, peace-lover and staunch opponent of war and violence, he was the founder of the NGO Emergency, which set up 18 hospitals around the world in war-torn countries such as Afghanistan, Sudan and Sudan.
The existence of people like Gino Strada is a powerful slap in the face of the credibility of all our dominant groups who glorify power, technological innovation, national security and spend 2 trillion dollars a year on weapons, to conquer, kill, dominate.
