Roberto Savio receives a prize from the Government of Chile

“Savio has a permanent residence: Indipendence and Freedom crossing”
That’s what the Ambassador of Chile Fernando Ayala said about Roberto Savio, on the 23rd of January 2018 in the Embassy of Chile in Rome, while handing him the honor by the Government of Chile, for his support to the democratic cause after Pinochet’s coup.
The room was packed of journalists, diplomats, and friends of the founder and Honorary President of IPS, and founder and President of Othernews.

“This is a very special occasion for me – Ayala also said – to give Roberto Savio, on behalf of the Government of Chile, this honor with many thanks for his selfless and valiant humanitarian help in democracy’s recovery. This prize has been given to whom supported democratic fight in our country and helped rescue many persecuted people’s lives, as Roberto did”.
Savio’s Thank You speech was particularly meaningful and incisive, with his sharp and punctual analysis he went through the historical phases that have happened since the coup in Chile, therefore since the Cold War, till now: the fall of Berlin Wall and of ideologies, Washington Agreement, Globalization, privatizations (experimented in Latin America, a lab rat before Russia), the switch of attention from human beings to the markets, until nowadays recurrence of nationalism and populism.
This prize is a very important signal for all who still believe in democracy and freedom of thought, and who recognize Roberto Savio as a foundamental guide.
